IRS & State Tax Returns

  • The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is a United States government agency that collects yearly taxes on income.
  • States also collect taxes on income. The Oklahoma Tax Commission (OTC) is the state agency that collects taxes in Oklahoma.

  • Tax returns must be submitted by April 15th of the next year. This is called 'filing your taxes.'
  • The amount of taxes you owe is based on gross income, which is the total of the money, services, and property you have received that year.
  • You are responsible for filing and paying your taxes. You are also responsible for the accuracy of the tax return and any resulting penalties or interest.
  • The University of Oklahoma does not offer tax assistance, but recommends that you seek the advice of a tax professional in the preparation of your tax returns. The OU Payroll Office offers a Tax Help Guide.
  • Taxes provide funding for the government and many sorts of important public services such as road repair, police and fire departments, and schools. There are also other kinds of taxes including sales tax and property tax.
