University Medical & Dental Insurance

If you qualify for University retirement and have been enrolled in the University’s health plan for five years immediately prior to retirement, you are eligible to participate in a group health plan. You may continue to cover any eligible dependents you are covering at the time of your retirement. If you qualify for University retirement you are eligible to participate in a group dental plan. During the Annual Enrollment period you are allowed to change your current coverage from one plan to another. A Qualifying Event such as marriage or the birth of a child is the only exception that will allow you to add your eligible dependents to your coverage.  See Retiree Health Insurance on page 11 of the OU Retirement Policy for a complete listing.

If you are retiring at age 65 or older you should be enrolled in Medicare PART “A” and PART “B” to receive the maximum health benefit offered through the University health plan. Currently Medicare retirees do not need to enroll in Medicare Part D. For Medicare-eligible retirees, Medicare will serve as your primary coverage. The University’s health plan will serve as a supplement, paying any eligible expenses not covered by Medicare. In order to ensure a smooth transition from employee to Medicare retiree health coverage, it is crucial the Benefits Office receives your completed Aetna Medicare RX Prescription Drug Plan form 60 days prior to your retirement.  Aetna Prescription Drug packets and forms are available in the Benefits Office.

You may continue to provide coverage for your spouse and/or dependents after retirement. You will be required to pay insurance premiums by personal checks since you will no longer receive income from the University; therefore, payroll deductions are no longer possible.  It is very important you notify the Benefits Office of any change of address.

PLEASE NOTE:
Your employee coverage will be terminated and you will receive a Certificate of Credible Coverage from Aetna. You will be enrolled in our retiree health coverage and will receive new insurance cards. Your health coverage will remain the same if you are Pre-Medicare. You will be enrolled in the Aetna Traditional Indemnity Plan, if you are Medicare Eligible and new cards will be mailed to your home.

The rates for Pre-Medicare eligible dependents of retirees are higher than the rates charged for employee’s spouses or dependents. Please refer to the rate chart.
