Employment Eligibility VerificationThe Immigration Reform and Control Act made all U.S. employers responsible to verify the employment eligibility and identity of all employees hired to work in the United States after November 6, 1986. To implement the law, employers are required to complete Employment Eligibility Verification forms (Form I-9) for all employees, including U.S. citizens. When hired for a new job, employees are required to prove that they are legally entitled to work in the United States. Employees must present original documents, not photocopies. The only exception is an employee may present a certified copy of a birth certificate. On the form, the employer must verify the employment eligibility and identity documents presented by the employee and record the document information on the I-9 form. An employee who fails to produce the required document, or a receipt for a replacement document (in the case of lost, stolen or destroyed documents), within three business days of the date employment begins, can be terminated. An employee who shows a receipt has ninety days to present the original documents. Employees who have new or renewed work authorization should present the original document to their employer in order to update and/or reverify the I-9 form. International employees at the University of Oklahoma - Norman campus must present themselves to Judy Chance, HR Payroll & Records, NEL 244. Health Science Center employees will present themselves and provide original documents to their department Payroll Coordinator. See FORM M-274; Handbook for Employers - Instructions for Completing the I-9 (rev. 06/07) Tulsa employees will present themselves to the Office of Human Resources. See also New Hire Procedures. |
